Third short essay: applying upstander taxonomy

This essay is very short. You need to make your argument, then support that argument with carefully selected, reliable primary and secondary sources.

The prompt

Select one of the following historical figures and make an argument that they either were or were not an upstander, based on the criteria we developed in class.

  • Anne Hutchinson (1591-1643, Puritan)
  • John Brown (1800-1859, abolitionist)
  • Nat Turner (1800-1831, enslaved preacher)
  • Thomas Leiper Kane (1822-1883, Union general)
  • Biddy Mason (1818-1891, enslaved part of her life, nurse, entrepreneur)

Specifically, your essay should:

  • Make a straightforward argument. Was this person an upstander? Yes or no.
  • Use reliable secondary sources and primary sources to support that argument.

Essays must include this addendum:

  • On a separate page at the end of your essay, write a paragraph or bulleted list detailing how comments from Noah and/or Dr. Madsen on your first or second paper influenced your writing and revision of this one.

How your essay will be evaluated

Your essay will be evaluated according to this rubric. There will not be an opportunity to rewrite this essay for a higher grade.

Tips for effective and efficient research and writing

  • You don’t have a lot of room to waffle in 500 words. Use them wisely.
  • Read the rubric carefully.
  • This is a formal essay. Use the third person point of view (i.e., do not use “I” or “you”).
  • Do not cite Wikipedia, though Wikipedia may be a good place to start learning about your selected historical figure.

Guidelines

  • Your essay should be between 450 and 500 words.
  • You can double- or single-space.
  • Proofread your essay carefully.
  • Submit your essay as a Google doc to your student folder.
  • Cite sources in footnotes, using the Chicago Manual of Style.

Due date

Your essay must be uploaded to your Google Drive student folder by 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 22.
